About my mile time

Answered By Mick Grant & John Molvar

Question

Hi. I'm a 13 year old runner and I just wanted to know if I would have been a qualifier at the Junior Olympics if could have had a chance. So please send me a qualifying time for the mile. I forgot to say that my name is Evan and I'm a boy from Ohio. My best time for 2 miles is 11:40. My longest race is the Elby's Big Boy Classic 20k. I run 4 to 6 times a week. On Aug. 9 I have been running for a year. I run 4 miles a day when I run. I ran cross country and track this year for my school. I always placed 7th or better. I almost always run alone since track and cross country is not in season. Please write back in the next few days. Bye, Evan

Answer

Dear Evan, You are off to a good start. I would skip the 20k runs for a while and concentrate on short races. I like to gradually build strength over several years while racing short races to develop good form and efficiency. Your mile time is very good and I'm sure you could break 5 easily with a little focus. You should maybe run a couple of 400 & 800 races to see what you can do. Your mile time would have placed 1st or 2nd in New England this year in the 13-14 group. Running can be a lifetime sport, so it is important to build up slowly. Please keep in touch Best wishes, Coach Mick and John
