13 year old wants to improve mile

Dear Coach, I am 13 years old and have run 2 miles in 11:45, a 5K in 19:02, and a mile in 5:42. I would like to improve my mile, but I am inexperienced and fade badly on the second and third laps. I run about 25 miles a week and do speedwork. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike


Dear Mike, I think you should be patient. My kids work on their 400/800 times while preparing to run the mile. The easy distance running they do for strength and the speed is aimed at improving their 400 time. I like the kids to run 2:15 for 800 prior to trying the mile. Our specific mile prep includes pace training and learning to run the 3rd quarter hard. You should also look for a local youth track club. Good luck! Fun first, Coach Mick and John
