My kids want to run with me

Answered By Mick Grant & John Molvar

Good luck Mick Hi Coach, Recently I started running again (I ran cross-country and track in high school) and my kids are also very interested. I know that you can run too much as a youngster so my question is, "How much is too much? My two daughters, 12 and 14, both run 1.5 miles a day on trails and my son (age 10) and I both do the same distance alternating between light jogs and walks. My two daughters both want to join cross-country this fall and they want to run 3 miles a day 5 days a week. Is that too much? Considering the start of cross-country season next month I think it isn't but I'm not sure. Any advice would be helpful. Also how much do you recommend my son runs? He wants to do 1.5 miles a day running but I've held him back. Thank you, Clarence

Dear Clarence, If your daughters build up slowly, they can likely handle the training load. Your son should also be ok on 1-2 miles per workout if you build up to the distance and make the runs fun. I've had many 10 year olds run 1-1.5 miles, do some drills and strides, then do another mile. All relaxed running. It sounds like you are on the right track with your kids. Maybe mix up a little bit of faster running with the distance running. Keep the training fun and interesting. Fun first, Coach Mick and John
