Classroom run

Answered By Mick Grant & John Molvar

Question

There is a 5k run, Race against Racism, in Lancaster, PA every spring. I teach in an elementary school in Lancaster City. I have suggested to my 4th and 5th grade students that we try this run. I am planning to have them walk some and run some. Any suggestions as to how far to walk and how far to run for this race? Or is this a bad idea all together? Thank you, Leigh Ann Rohrer Lancaster, PA

Answer

Dear Leigh Ann, I think the class could complete the distance. Managing them might require some planning. Some kids could run for 10 minutes at a time (or more) and others might only be able to run for 1 minute at a time. You should enlist some help, then break the class into groups based on ability. Have a few practices prior to the race so you know what to expect. Fun first, Coach Mick and John
