Cross trianing
Answered By Jeff Arbogast

Question
Do you recommend cross training for high school cross country athletes?
Answer
Addison . . The best thing for cross country is event specific training, i.e. running, but in the event of an injury or other problem, pool running (with a flotation vest in the deep end) is the next best thing. Biking doesn't use the same muscles, and full swimming is aerobically positive, but again uses entirely different actions. Some programs have dedicated one day per week to pool running in order to limit the pounding young athletes take in a full microcycle of training. They have been successful, but may have options unavailable to most high schools. Hope that helps . . Train hard . . . have fun . . . Arb
