14-year old new runner

Answered By Not an expert

Question

My foster daughter is interested in "long distance" running. She will be in high school next year. Can you please give me some help in getting her ready for competition? I don't want her to get hurt. Stretches, any kind of advice so she does not get hurt but is able to enjoy the sport. Thanks, Diana Pierce, Foster Mom to Crystal Cosme

Answer

Before giving out random advice....we would suggest finding a running club or youth track club in your area (Find a Team)....connect with a coach that can give her sound advice and actually start running with other athletes. You can also check the event calendar and see if their are any marathons-5K races with youth runs...they will usually have training programs that she can attend. Next, I would go to the high school that she will be attending, introduce yourself to the coach afterpractice and with any luck he or she will point you in the right direction. If you can't find anyone in your area please email back, we'll try to find someone for you.
