Triathlon running

By Jeff Arbogast

Question

My 15 year old daughter trains for triathlon with a club with qualified coaches. This is her week; Mon swim 1.5 hrs. to include specific sets and drills both sprint & distance sets (coached by national swim coach) Tues. run 1.25 hrs to include a warm up sprint set 300 hundreds and hill repeats (coached by national triathlon coach) Wed swim 1.5 hrs to include specific sets and drills both sprint & distance sets (coached by national swim coach) Thurs. bike 25 km and then a run set of sprints for 1 hr (coached by national triathlon coach) Fri. swim 2 hrs to include specific sets and drills both sprint & distance sets (coached by national swim coach) Sat. totally off just rest Sun. swim 1.5 hrs. to include specific sets and drills both sprint & distance sets (coached by national swim coach) and then a 4 km recovery run (coached by national triathlon coach) She is having a lot of trouble with her running this year. She just can’t run especially after the swim or bike workout. She can’t keep up or finish the sets. She said that her calves feel like lead. She has food in between these workouts so after the bike/swim she eats and drinks before moving on to the run. She will have some sort of protein and a fruit or granola bar. She is more of a sprinter than a distance runner. She has the sprinter body/muscle type. She has been competing for the last few years in triathlon and always done well. She has a great base so even though she is a sprinter she can go the distance and finish in the top 4. Typical event is 400 m open water swim, 15 to 20 km bike and a 4 km run. We don’t understand what is happening to her and her triathlon coach really doesn’t explain things when we approach him. I feel that my daughter is on the verge of quitting, which would be a real shame given how much fun she has had with this sport. The past few months she comes home crying saying that this just isn’t fun anymore. Her coach has seen that she is upset and doesn't try to help her. I really just don't know what to do.
