Training

Answered By Mick Grant & John Molvar

Question

Im Irish and not the tallest with short legs my stride is also very small. I have ran a 2.05 800m on a very windy day. I dont really think my training is much good I lack speed in my race and I am doing 1000s week in week out. I am 16 now what should I be doing to cut seconds off my time because I know I am capable of going below two minutes.

Answer

You want to gradually increase your mileage to get stronger and do 200s for race pace training and 50s for speed training. Height and stride length is not what you need to concern yourself with. Look at stride rate (# right foot strikes per minute x 2) This should be around 180 or even higher. As you get stronger, your stride rate will get longer naturally. Never artificially try to increase your stride rate.
