What are you thoughts on best types of cross training.

I'm a sophomore in high school running on varsity for my XC, indoor track, and spring track teams. What are your thoughts on cross training and what type is the best? How many days should I do it on per week, if any? Also, I don't have access to a pool and I heard that helps with injury prevention. Any suggestions about that too?
