How many miles should a freshman distance runner

How many miles a week do you recommend for a freshman distance runner? This will be his first season of competitive running. Thanks.


That's a hard question to answer. There are lots of variables at play. When I was a high school coach our freshman males generally ran around 35-40 miles a week. Sophomores 40-45. Juniors 45-50 and Seniors ran somewhere between 50-65. Of course, this was all very dependent on their history, previous injuries, general durability etc. Hope this helps.
